Buena Vista Virginia was founded primarily by Benjamin C. Moowmaw in the late 1800s. In 1888 the Buena Vista Company was organized and began selling stocks which sold out in 30 days and raised $400,000. The town was laid out consisting of 13,140 acres and Buena Vista was granted a town charter in 1890 and then a city charter in 1892.
